The department of Charente-Maritime is the second tourist destination of the hexagon for holidaymakers after the French department of Var in the south-eastern France.
Following a TNS Sofres conducted by the Ministry of Tourism in 2011 in France, the market share of the department is 3% against 3.6% for the Var and 2.8% for the Hérault in southwestern France.
The Charente-Maritime has many advantages such as being the first department of France for fitness by water with 6 thalassotherapy centers and spas 3 and 1 department of France for the number of sites labeled "Tourism and handicap. "
The department houses two sites among the 10 busiest in France (the Aquarium La Rochelle and La Palmyre zoo) and the third festival of music: Francofolies which is organized in the city of La Rochelle every year in July .
2012 will be an eventful year with the launch in June of Vélodyssée (Eurovélo1 crossing France from Roscoff to Hendaye) that runs the Charente-Maritime on 150 km, the last wave of the hull of the six Hermione Rochefort July (more than 3.5 million visitors since the launch of the site) and the 40th anniversary of the Grand Pavois, one of the largest boat show afloat, in September 2012.
